The Radicalachians

Exploration of people, places and policies that are making lasting change in Appalachia

From radical queers, economic reovery programs that break the mould, untold histories of culture and resistance, and radical shifts in economic, political and cultural thought, the Radicalachian Reader Series brings the most contemporary, accessible and rich analysis of social research and social change in one of the US's most complicated regions.

The first 3 'Radicalachian Readers' series are announced...

We are very excited to expand the academic scope through which we view Appalachia, both within and without. This series of Readers is specifically designed to provide a cohesive, grounded, and current picture of the depth and breadth of cutting edge research and analysis about this diverse region of the United States. Each Reader is a topically grouped and easily accessible volume ready for introductory courses in sociology, culture, appalachian studies, economics, political science, history, and many other undergradaute courses and seminars. These volumes also lend clarity and context to major policy discussions within law, goverment, politics, regional studies and international relations.

The Radicalachians: 8 Cultural Shifts Changing a Region

"The Radicalachians: 8 Cultural Shifts Changing a Region"

We invite chapters exploring major cultural shifts taking place in the Appalachian Region. From qualitative analysis of cultural programs making change to investigations of subcultures, scenes and seismic shifts in culture, we are looking for eight shifts that might lay the groundwork for permanent shifts in the way that Appalachia is viewed or views itself. From mining and metals economies, to arts and music, to economic development to political changes, every facet of the way we 'see' Appalachia is welcome. Please see the Call for Chapters for more detail, constraints, and submission formats.
